How to Calculate Gas Mileage

The Environmental Protection Agency, or the EPA, rates new vehicles based on fuel efficiency. A lot goes of science goes into these ratings, but as disclaimers point out, “actual mileage may vary.” So, if you’re looking for a quick method for how to calculate gas mileage on your Knoxville and Pella drives, keep reading. Here DeYarman Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM provides a gas mileage calculator; if you have questions, contact us. We are always happy to help!

What is Considered Good Gas Mileage?

There is no set standard for what constitutes “good” gas mileage on Indianola roads. For example, if you drive an SUV, your gas mileage, while good, will likely be lower than what you would get in a compact car. The same principle applies to comparing gas-powered cars with gasoline-electric hybrids, which are always more efficient. When shopping for a new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or RAM, be sure to research new vehicles or used vehicles with the gas mileage you want!

Gas Mileage Calculator

You can learn how to calculate gas mileage for your vehicle. Here is the process:

  1. Fill your gas tank to the top and either reset your trip odometer or write down the precise mileage on your odometer after refilling. Be sure you also know how much fuel your tank holds by reading your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  2. Continue to drive your car as normal. Try not to accelerate more briskly or slowly than usual, or your gas mileage calculator won’t accurately reflect your average gas mileage.
  3. Let your gas tank get to near empty. Then, refill your tank and write down your mileage.
  4. The easiest way to calculate gas mileage is to divide the miles traveled by the gallons of gas your vehicle needs to refill. Again, that’s miles driven divided by gallons of gas consumed.
  5. Suppose you forgot how many gallons you used to fill your car at the previous pump. In that case, you can figure approximately where your tank was when you refilled (i.e., ¼, ½, or ¾) and then divide your total tank capacity accordingly to get the number of gallons required to refill. Then, divide the miles driven by that approximation. This method will be less accurate since the gas gauge in most vehicles isn’t always 100% accurate. A digital gas gauge is much more accurate than an analog gauge.
