Safely Using a Car Jack and Jack Stand

Knowing how to properly use a jack for a car properly is essential to your safety. That said, it’s imperative that you follow these instructions carefully:

  • Park your vehicle securely on level ground (preferably pavement). Never use a car jack on dirt or grass.
  • Place wheel wedges, bricks, or wood blocks behind the tires that will remain on the ground.
  • Put your car in “Park” and engage the emergency brake. If your car has a manual transmission, put the car in first gear while engaging the parking brake.
  • Find out where to place the jack under your car by consulting your owner’s manual. If you need to lift the front or rear of the car, choose a jack point at the center of the frame. If you only need to lift one wheel, just lift the corner of the vehicle.
  • Determine whether you have a scissor jack or a hydraulic jack. If you have a hydraulic jack, insert the handle into the jack’s body, pump the handle, and lift the car to your desired height. If you have a scissor jack, simply insert and crank the rod.
  • Next, place the jack stand under the car frame. Place it at the reinforced point on the car’s frame, known as the “pinch weld.”
  • Depending on the type of jack stand you have, use the pin, screw, or pawl to adjust the stand’s height. After locking it into place, slowly lower the car with the jack until it rests securely on the jack stand. Gently push the car to ensure it doesn’t move.
  • Once you’re finished working on your car, use the jack to lift the car a few inches and remove the jack stand.
  • Gently lower the vehicle, remove the jack, and recover the wheel blocks you put down earlier.
