Are All Jeep Models 4-Wheel Drive?

There are no Jeep AWD models in the current lineup. All Jeep vehicles come equipped with standard 4X4, save for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models, which are available in either rear-wheel drive or 4X4. But what does 4X4 mean on a Jeep? Jeep models are available with many types of 4X4 drivetrains, each with different handling capabilities fine-tuned for specific terrains.

What Does 4X4 Mean on a Jeep?

Jeep engineers have developed a variety of 4X4 systems, several of which are exclusive to different Jeep models. For instance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee can come equipped with the Quadra-Trac, Quadra-Trac II, Quadra-Drive, or Quadra-Trac SRT 4X4 systems. Each drivetrain was designed with a different form of driving in mind. Meanwhile, the Wrangler is available with the following three 4X4 systems: 

• Command-Trac® 4X4 System: This drivetrain delivers torque to all four wheels and includes a 2:72:1 gear ratio, perfect for crawling on rocky terrain. 

• Selec-Trac® 4X4 System: This system allows you to switch between 2WD and 4X4 to maximize fuel economy on your commute and handling on off-road adventures. 

• Rock-Trac® System: This system includes a 4:1 low gear ratio and 100:1 crawl ratio, making it ideal for serious off-roaders looking to take on formidable talus slopes.
